About Finding Their Way Home

What’s your debut poetry collection about? Finding Their Way Home deals with social issues like domestic abuse, rape, and self-harming. I won’t pretend those poems are easy to read, but they aren’t intended to be. There are also poems about love, loss, loneliness, and betrayal.

All poems are housed under the umbrella theme of our shared humanity. Many of the poems tell a story. The language is simple, honest, and heartfelt. And despite some of the more difficult topics, I tried to leave readers with a sense of hope.

One reviewer compared the poems in the second section of my book to song lyrics. Given my love of music, I took that as a huge compliment.

Why should people read your book? The themes in my book are universal in that we’ve all experienced joy, pain, and heartbreak, so readers will be able to identify with many of the characters. As I’ve mentioned before, my book deals with a number of different social issues, and while those issues are not new, we need to keep the discussion going.

Who will like your book? I think people who have experienced the beauty, joy, and sorrow that are all a part of living, will like my book. But of course, that’s for the reader to decide.

Why did you decide to self-publish? After I started my blog, I discovered an entire community of amazing writers online. Many of those are self-published authors. So, when the time came for me to publish, it felt like the natural way to go. It never occurred to me not to self-publish my book.

What people are saying about Finding Their Way Home

When Coffee Meets Poetry

Heartfelt, raw and quite remarkable. If you love poetry, then this is something to read. Dora Okeyo

Wow! The author’s words dominate the pages of this book and provide intellectual unadulterated views of the world directly from her heart. This is not your normal book of poems, it is life’s perspective that leaves you thinking long after reading the final page. C. Y. Spencer

This is one of the few books (poetry or otherwise) in which I have left bookmarks on my e-reader to look at every now and then.

The poems are heartfelt, sometimes gritty, and they hit home with me every single one of them. Baker is an artist with words. Jantine Kampes

This is an absolutely wonderful book of poetry. The author really shares from her heart. Some of these poems are heart-wrenching and I felt a pull toward the author as she shared such heartfelt poems. These will grab and tug at your heart strings. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to more from this author. Excellent book and it gets 5***** from me. Shannan Williams

This an excellent collection of poetry. Brenda Baker takes the reader on a journey of words that come home to share their stories. I highly recommend this wonderful collection of her writings. Walter Page

This is Brenda Baker’s first collection of poetry, divided into four sections each with a very different feel and theme. It’s illustrated throughout, and I think reading this in print would enhance the experience, not only as it seems to have been put together beautifully, but also to allow you to move more easily between sections…

I did enjoy this collection, and will look forward to further work by the author. Rachel O.
